What is network marketing? As a network marketer, do you ever freak out when someone asks you this question?
In this article I will explain what network marketing is, and show you why you should have confidence when explaining network marketing to someone who asks you what you do.
What Is Network Marketing?
What do you say when someone asks you what network marketing is? Do you give an answer that’s authentic and real? Do you have confidence in the network marketing industry you are a part of, or do you panic and try to come up with a cryptic, scripted answer when someone asks what it is you do?
Understanding What Network Marketing Is So You Can Be Confident in Sharing it With Others.
When I first got started in network marketing back in 2005 I heard all kinds of fancy ways to explain what it is we actually do:
“I teach people how to create financial freedom using sweat equity.”
“I teach people how to live a life of freedom.”
“I help the average person create time and financial freedom by providing them with a vehicle to earn a full-time income in part-time hours.”
Surely I’m not the only one who’s heard some of these phrases. And while yes… they are true. More often than not they left the person I was talking to scratching their head, and even more confused than they were before they asked the question!
Why can’t we just say, “I’m in network marketing!” and then be prepared to answer when someone asks us what network marketing is?
So What Is Network Marketing? Let’s Break It Down:
Network marketing is simply the process of marketing products and services to your network. It really is that simple! Sometimes we are marketing with the intention to gain a new customer, and other times we are marketing with the intention of gaining a new team member. Either way, the basic principles are the same.
As defined by the American Marketing Association, marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.

Isn’t that what we do as network marketers every day?
The dictionary defines network as a group or system of interconnected people or things.
In other words, your network is the people you know and the people you meet.
So then, at its core…
What is network marketing? Network Marketing is the act of creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings that have value to the people we know and the people we meet.

What to say when someone asks, “What Is Network Marketing”:
Now that you understand what network marketing really is, let’s explore what you should say when someone asks you, “What is network marketing?”
It’s really very simple. Rather than spend millions of dollars in marketing and advertising each year, network marketing companies compensate us (the consultants or distributors) for marketing their products and services to our network.
We do this without compensation all the time. When we recommend a movie or a great restaurant, or when we respond to a friend’s post on social media making a recommendation for the best things to do in New York City.
Network marketing companies understand that the recommendation of a friend is more powerful than any advertising campaign. And they are willing to compensate us for our recommendations! How cool is that!
Your Responsibility as a Network Marketer:
So then, if network marketing is the action of communicating, delivering and exchanging products or services that offer value to the people we know and the people we meet, wouldn’t it then serve us to both learn how to market correctly and learn how to consistently grow our network of influence?
Of course it would!
As a network marketer our core responsibility is twofold:
To learn how to talk to people in a way that communicates the value of our products or business opportunity, both to spark curiosity and gain their initial interest, and then later to present that product and opportunity to them effectively.
To learn the skills required to consistently be growing our network of influence so that the circle of people we know and of people who now us gets larger every day.
