The Lifeblood of Your Network Marketing Business

One of the most successful network marketers in our industry, Bill Britt, said this:

“There is no secret. I simply showed the plan to 1200 people. 900 said, ‘No’ and only 300 signed up. Out of those 300, only 85 did anything at all. Out of those 85 only 35 were serious, and out of those 35, 11 made me a millionaire.”

Now, raise your hand if you or anyone you know has ever thought, “This thing just doesn’t work.”

Really? You too?

And now raise your hand again if you later found out that person hadn’t even shown the plan to 12 people… much less 1200!

One of the main reasons people fail in network marketing is because they quit before they ever really get started. They come into this business thinking they can share their company’s opportunity and products to a hand full of their friends, sit back and watch the dollars roll in. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Network marketing (or any truly worthy thing worth pursuing) just doesn’t work that way. It never has and it never will. If you want to build a successful network marketing organization you must be prepared to share the plan with hundreds, if not thousands of people throughout your journey.

And that brings us to our second problem: Another frequent “reason” why people quit their business? They “run out” of people to talk to.

I’ve encountered it myself… that feeling of looking down at a list of names in a spiral and thinking, “There is no one here left to call.” And I’m here to tell you… that is complete b.s.

There are over 300 MILLION people in the United States alone. How in the world did we start convincing ourselves that we’ve run out of people to talk to??

The thing is, most of the people who join a network marketing company have never been in business before. They have no experience strategically building networks and broadening their sphere of influence, but if you ask any truly successful person in any profession they’ll tell you: it’s not about what you know, it’s who you know. So it’s time we teach our teams how to get to know more people.

For years and years I taught 3 key strategies to building a business:

  • Reach out to 2 new people about your product or opportunity every day.
  • Follow-up with 2 people you’ve reached out to previously.
  • Follow-through with those who’ve chosen to join you and teach them to do the same.

But throughout all those years I was missing a key step:

Meet 5-10 new people every day and add them to your list.

This skill will become the lifeblood of your network marketing organization. Yes, I called it a skill — networking and strategically growing your sphere of influence is a skill anyone can learn if they work on it. Just like you had to learn the right language to use when introducing your business to someone new, you can learn how to meet new people every day. This is great news… because it means anyone can do it!

Too many people come into this business under the impression that the ones with the largest network on the day they join wins. Yes… sometimes it can be easier for those people. But the thing is, the ones who really win in the end are the ones who learn how to constantly be expanding and growing their network, effectively ensuring they NEVER run out of people to talk to about their business.

You can meet people every day as you simply go about your daily routine, and you can also be more purposeful about it by employing network strategies through social media. Please hear me though: This does NOT mean spamming your link to a dozen people every day. In fact, when you initially meet these people the less you say about what you actually do, the more you win! This conversation must be truly about making a new connection… a new friend. Add their name to your list, stay in touch, remain genuinely interested in what they have going on in their life and consider circling back to talk about your business at a later time. Often, a much later time!

People are everywhere. When you learn to consciously reach out and make new friends every day your business will change forever. There’s something magical about knowing you’ve created a large network of people… and even more magic in know you’ve acquired the skills that will allow you to continue to grow that network whenever you choose.
