To stay true to yourself is the cornerstone of success in life. Throughout both your career and your life in general, you will be introduced to all kinds of new opportunities.
Opportunities to grow, and opportunities to shrink. Opportunities to create, and opportunities to destroy. Opportunities to succeed, and opportunities to fail. Opportunities to move closer to your goal, and opportunities to distract you from your goal.
The problem with opportunities is their purpose is often not clear. Some are hidden gems… a priceless wine with a dusty bottle. Others are wolves in sheep’s clothing.
So how are we ever supposed to decide which is which?
The fact is, sometimes we can’t.
Choosing to have a successful life is risky business. If there is one thing about mediocrity it is that safety is its close ally. But why settle for safe when you can take the risk and achieve extraordinary?!
As I look back at the opportunities I’ve had in my life I’m proud to say I’ve made the most of most of them. Some have been abysmal failures. Some have appeared to be failures, but through that failure have lead to something greater. Some have turned out to be nothing but a distraction. Still others have lead to discoveries that have changed my life.
ALL have been learning experiences!
So what’s the deal? When traveling down the path of opportunity how do you know when to stay true and when to turn back? How do you now when you should choose a path that’s offered to you, or forge a new one of your own?
The answer is to stay true to yourself.
When you become rock solidly clear about who you are and why you are here, and make the decision to stay true to that image at all costs, you will never be led too far astray.
Will you experience failure? Absolutely. Will you go down paths you wish you hadn’t? You bet. But will you ever become so lost that you cannot find your way back? No.
Making the commitment to stay true to yourself is the cornerstone of success in life. No matter where you go or what you do, if you can stay true to who you are you will never be far from the path that was created just for you. And isn’t that what success is anyway? Achieving the purpose you were put on this earth to fulfill? Absolutely.
So feel free to explore the opportunities that come into your life. Explore the safe ones, the unconventional ones, the clear ones and the seemingly impossible ones. Some will turn out to be great, others, not so much. Some will be easy, and still others will be difficult but will lead to even greater opportunities you could not have experienced without first traveling that dusty, deserted road.
Let your internal compass be your guide; it will tell you when you are safe, and it will alert you when something feels “just not right”. Refuse to compromise on your values and refuse to settle for mediocrity. Stay true to yourself and refuse to be anything but exactly who you were created to be!
Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure… than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. – Theodore Roosevelt
