The Power of Small Improvements Every Day

I love the Slight Edge Principle — I will never forget hearing about it for the first time, on the front row of a conference I was attending in Vegas. I went home, ordered and devoured the book and today, 4 years later, the spine is falling apart from the sheer number of times I have flipped through its pages.

At it’s most basic level, the Slight Edge Principle states that you are always moving forward or sliding backward. You are either getting richer or getting poorer. You are either getting healthier or becoming less healthy. There is no standing still.

It can be terrifying when you first think about this, but once you wrap your head around it I believe it becomes very empowering. Even when you can’t see the measurable progress, if you commit to taking even the smallest action towards your goals each day, you are moving closer.

It’s the small DAILY actions, compounded over time, that lead to your success.

Being such a fan of this principle, I happily latched on to the information shared in the book I’m currently reading… Awaken the Giant Within, by Tony Robbins.

In his book, Tony is quoted as saying, “The only true security in life comes from knowing that every single day you are improving yourself in some way, that you are increasing the caliber of who you are and that you are valuable to your company, your friends and your family. I don’t worry about maintaining the quality of my life, because every day I work on improving it.” 


That statement right there is gold.

By being 100% certain, without a shadow of a doubt, that we are doing something every day to improve ourselves and our life, we will never have to worry about simply maintaining the quality of life you enjoy today.

In fact, if the Slight Edge Principle stands true (which is always does), then it is actually those small daily actions that will lead to your overall success in life.

You may not notice them today. You may not notice them tomorrow. You may not notice them next week or even next month. But if you continue to small improvements every day in any area of your life then 6 months, 12 months, 3-5 years from now, I can virtually guarantee that you will not recognize the life you are now living.

Chances are, your life has already changed dramatically over the past 5 years. If you look back over what has occurred, you will likely discover a lot has changed. You have changed. You’ve tackled new difficulties, experienced new triumphs, you’re life has not been standing still.

By making a decision to get proactive about your life, you can virtually guarantee that 5 years from now your life will be completely different… for the better.

I’ll share one more truth from Tony’s book that I would like to encourage you to start implementing in your own life.

Here it is:

“As an integral part of my personal commitment to constant and never-ending improvement, at the end of each day I ask myself these questions: 

  • What have I learned today?
  • What did I contribute or improve?
  • What did I enjoy?

If every day you constantly improve your ability to enjoy your life, then you’ll experience it at a level of richness most people never even dream of.”

So my challenge to you today is to make a commitment to yourself to make a small improvement in some area of your life every day. End your day with those 3 questions, and experience the power of using the Slight Edge Principle PROACTIVELY in your life. 


 The principle is already at work. Your responsibility is to take control of it as opposed to allowing it to run haywire throughout your life.
