Network Marketing Success | Conquering the Accountability Monster
All the things that are great about network marketing also happen to be the things that keep so many people from achieving the network marketing success they desire:
- Be your own boss
- Set your own hours
- Work from wherever you want
- Schedule your business around the other important things in your life
Yes, network marketing spells FREEDOM, but for most that means the freedom to not work when they don’t feel like it… the freedom to put their business on the “back burner” for weeks [sometimes months] at a time… the freedom to work “no time” instead of part time…. and finally, the freedom to quit, because “this thing just doesn’t work.”
For a select few however, network marketing success and the freedom that comes with it is a reality. Freedom to travel the world. Freedom to retire their spouse. Freedom to never have to worry about bills again. Freedom to retire their spouse from their stressful job. Freedom to never miss a single dance recital, soccer game or class field trip. FREEDOM — in whatever shape or form it takes for them.
The people in both categories come from all walks of life. They represents thousands of different companies with various compensation plans and products. Some were among the founding distributors in their chosen company… others joined after tens of thousands of others already had. This tells me [ and should tell you] these are not the determining factors. Every day people succeed and fail in all kinds of companies, new and old. Every day someone is cashing a 6-figure check while someone else in their same company is turning in their resignation because “it doesn’t work.”
So what’s the difference?
The difference, is Accountability.
It’s unfortunate that this word has developed such a nasty reputation. Like a hall monitor watching your every move, “accountability” sounds much more suited for a kindergarten classroom than for a group of home business owners.
And yet you hear it in our industry all the time: “I just need someone to hold me accountable.”
Well my friend, let me invite you to take a look in the mirror.
No one… and I literally mean NO ONE can hold you accountable but you. “OH but Jordan, my boss holds me accountable at my day job, and I just know if I had that same level of accountability in my network marketing business I would do what I know I need to do.”
Not so fast. You may think your boss holds you accountable in your day job, but I have good news. YOU hold you accountable in your day job! Every day you choose to turn off your alarm, climb out of your cozy bed and drag yourself into work YOU are holding yourself accountable. The discomfort is worth the reward: your paycheck. And you know if you were to give into the discomfort of waking up and rushing out of the house each morning your paycheck would stop. And so, you push through and do what you need to do.
And if so many people are willing to do that for a paycheck, how much more so should we find the inner strength to be accountable in our network marketing business. A business that holds the potential to provide all the FREEDOM you’ve ever wanted in life!
Accountability is ownership. It’s having the courage and the honesty to look yourself in the mirror at the end of every day and ask, “Did I do what I needed to do today, and what more can I do tomorrow to produce better results?”
And accountability is owning the answer, whether it’s good or bad.
Accountability happens when we stop looking outside of ourselves for the improvements we seek. It’s understanding that success won’t come from a company or a compensation plan, it will only come from inside ourselves. When we make the conscious decision to own our thoughts and actions and the results they produce we suddenly become self-accountable… and that’s all that matters.
One of the strongest ways to take ownership of your success and become self-accountable is with a compelling personal vision. When you craft the masterpiece that is your ideal life you create an emotional connection between what you need to do, and why you’re doing it. That connection propels you forward and allows you to push through the pain and discomfort that comes with change and growth. A strong vision tells you WHY you need to do what you need to do each day. It gives relevance and traction to your business. It becomes the reason behind everything you choose to do.
