Network Marketing Defined
Network Marketing. It’s a polarizing term with a different connotation depending on who you speak to; for some the term is synonymous with freedom, opportunity, unlimited potential and personal growth. For others, network marketing brings to mind ideas of scams and pyramids, relentlessly bugging friends and family, and other unpleasant things. For most, however, the term is simply an unknown — sure, you’ve probably heard it before, but if you were to be asked “What exactly IS network marketing?” most people would have no idea how to define it.
Today I’m going to break down this term and get to the nitty gritty of what network marketing really is. Are you ready for it?
Network marketing is a business in which you MARKET to your NETWORK.
It really is that simple. And it’s how business is done in the “real world” every day!
To succeed in network marketing, our job is to be constantly growing our network of influence, thus increasing our reach and creating a broader audience to whom we can market our products and services.
Now don’t get me wrong… I am a firm believer in sharing your business and products with your friends and family. Mainly because I personally LOVE to do business with a family member or a friend whenever possible. I love to support them and their business! This is why, when launching a new product or opportunity, I begin with the people I know!
My current contact list is my go-to resource whenever I’m looking for a particular product or service… I have friends in advertising, event planning, fundraising, windshield repair, real estate, insurance, photography, hair styling, personal and business coaching, and the list goes on and on. And why on earth would I do a random google search when I have a friend who already offers the product or service I’m looking for?
If I’m ever looking for a particular service and don’t personally know someone in that field, I reach out to friends and ask for a referral. “Hey, I’m looking for a new ___________. Do you have anyone you’d recommend?” Why? Because if my friends do business with someone, there is a high likelihood that I will enjoy doing business with them too.
The problem in network marketing, because of the target market and low barrier of entry, is most distributors/consultants have never been in business before, and thus have no idea how to network OR market! They begin with their list of 20 friends and family members, experience mediocre to moderate success, and then never learn how to progress past that point.
Our #1 job as network marketers is to become expert networkers and marketers. Consistently building our list of contacts, and learning how to share our products and opportunity with those contacts in a way that is professional and effective.
As we grow our teams and build our business, our job expands to training our new consultants in a way that is effective and professional, raising the standard of operations in our industry. When we see someone marketing their business in a way that is ineffective, spammy or offensive, it’s typically because they were TRAINED that way, or weren’t trained at all. We don’t have the power to influence EVERYONE in the industry, but we do have the power to influence the culture and practices of our own teams, and that can be enough!
If your goal is to create a large full-time, or even 6- or 7-figure income in network marketing, I want to encourage you to commit to becoming an expert networker and marketer.
