Corny, Cheesy Mindset Stuff Based on True Events
We are right in the middle of our Networking + Marketing Training Series for Network Marketers, but today I felt compelled to take a break and share some thoughts/observations from my own life over the past few weeks and months.
As much personal development “stuff” as I’ve digested over the years, I am still constantly learning and evolving and figuring out how to apply these things to real life. It’s easy to say “be positive” or “focus on the good stuff” or “visualize what you want, not what you have”… it’s another thing entirely to actually do those things when you’re in the thick of the changes and challenges of life. That being said, we must do those things, and more. If we don’t, we aren’t giving ourselves a chance to step into our best selves… and at the end of the day that’s what we were put on this earth to be: our very best.
So I hope you enjoy this brief departure from our normal blogging topics and get some value from it as well. Here we go:
- Whatever you focus on, expect to get more of the same: This is totally one of those things that falls into the “easy to say not-so-easy to do” category. When life doesn’t go according to plan it’s all-t0-easy to focus on what’s NOT going right… whether it be your career, your relationships, your health, your finances or anything else. Unfortunately when we focus on the negative we create more negative. After all, thoughts are things. Our outer world is manifestation of our inner world. If you don’t believe me shoot me an email I’ll gladly send you a list of references so you can do your own research. This is why it’s so vitally important to focus on the good things especially when you feel overwhelmed with the bad things. When we focus on the negative we get more negative… and that negativity compounds upon itself over and over and over again until the positive becomes virtually impossible to recognize. No matter what is going on in your life there is ALWAYS something positive to focus on… if you need a place to start I suggest being thankful for your beating heart and breathing lungs 🙂
- Life Is Top-Of-Mind-Awareness: This kind of goes along with the point mentioned above. TOMA — Top of Mind Awareness — is an advertising and marketing concept that applies across all spectrums of our life. Have you ever made the decision to purchase a new vehicle and suddenly you are seeing them EVERYWHERE? That’s TOMA. Your brain is absolutely bombarded with stimuli all day every day. It naturally filters out 99% of it and only makes you aware of the things that read “important” to your brain. This is why you might barely notice a car passing by in the lane next to you, but a blaring horn has your reflexing reacting instantaneously. That’s a pretty literal example, but travel with me just outside the box for a minute: TOMA not only applies to the physical stimuli in our world, but the mental and emotional as well.
If you’ve ever experienced a bad day getting worse or a good day getting better then you know what I’m talking about. TOMA is all about awareness… and when we choose to focus on something negative we suddenly become INCREDIBLY aware of every other negative thing we encounter throughout the day. The good news is we can choose positivity or negativity at any moment of every day… you can choose to be frustrated at being stuck in traffic on the way to work, or you can choose to be grateful that you weren’t involved in the accident that caused traffic to slow. And whatever you choose, that’s what you’ll continue noticing. My advice here is to LOOK for the positive in every situation… do this often enough and you will begin to naturally see the positive more than the negative.
- Whatever you feed, grows: Negativity, positivity, anger, gratitude, hate, love, fear, courage, anxiety, peace…. whatever you feed will continue to grow and grow and grow until it consumes your life. If you want your life to be full of positivity, gratitude, love, courage and peace you absolutely must feed those things and starve the others. As humans we have this incredible power to choose how we feel about any given thing in any given moment. Regardless of external circumstances we can choose happiness, we can choose positivity, we can choose love, we can choose grace, we can choose peace. No one and no thing can decide how you feel except for you…. and when you really get that concept there is nothing more freeing in the world. We are free to choose to feel however we want to feel… so why not choose everything positive and reject everything negative? We do this every time we consciously decide to release any thought or belief that doesn’t serve us. In the words of Elsa… just let it go ;
- Your Happiness Begins and Ends with You: This one hurts sometimes. Personal responsibility isn’t always fun, but it is always true. We alone are solely responsible for each and every facet of our own lives. You can believe it or not, but either way it’s the truth… and the sooner we realize this the sooner we can move along the path of true happiness and fulfillment. I’ll never forget the first time I heard this concept; it was November 2007 when a very smart person said to me “You must become your own secure base for happiness in this world.” I don’t remember hardly anything else he said in the hours and hours we talked, but that phrase I will never forget. I remember thinking “I can do that”, and I did. It set me on a whole new course… and my life was almost unrecognizable a year later. When we hang our happiness on circumstances or other people we are setting ourselves up for failure and disappointment. People make mistakes. Circumstances change. The way you think and feel about yourself is strong enough to carry you through anything. And when you recognize and exercise this incredible power your life can be forever changed!
I could go on, but this has gotten a bit long… so I will pocket some of my additional thoughts and save them for future posts. Here’s the thing though… sometimes life will throw you for a loop. Things won’t go according to plan. People will let you down. You will let yourself down. These things are facts of life. But when we arm ourselves with a crystal clear vision of the life we want to live it becomes incredibly easy to know what to say yes to and what to say no to… what to hold on to and what to let go of… what to fight for and when to change direction. And in the midst of change and challenges we can find the power to choose happiness every day… to focus on and be grateful for every single tiny thing in life we have to be grateful for…. to let go of stress and embrace peace and joy and love and every other positive thing there is to be found in our every day.
It sounds cheesy. It kind of is. But it’s also true! I’ve found it to be so over and over and over again in my own life, both when I remembered to exercise this power and even more so when I’ve forgotten to.
